Guidebook with maps/step-by-step

Start – The start is at Place du Balat, in front of the “espace randonnée” sign.

1- Go straight ahead, up the stairs leading to the Maison de la Faune. Turn left into rue Porte de la Garde. At the small square, continue straight ahead.

2- In Place Gandilhon Gens d’Armes, turn right and walk alongside the Collegiale Notre-Dame-des-Oliviers. Go up the steps from Place Marchande to Rue Porte Saint-Esprit, then left. At the crossroads with rue Marchadial, go straight on into rue de Lavergne and reach the corner of rue d’Armagnac (historic 16th-century residence).

3- Keep right on rue de Lavergne until you reach rue de Bonnevie. Cross the crossroads, go straight ahead and take the track; it reaches the D3, skirts the latter on the left, then passes a small pass.

4- Take the left-hand path which climbs towards the statue of the Virgin (Way of the Cross). At station XII, take advantage of the viewpoint below (overlooking the town of Murat). Reach the foot of the statue of Notre-Dame de la Haute-Auvergne (360° view of the Monts du Cantal and Murat surroundings). Follow the same path to the D3, then to the Rue de Bonnevie crossroads.

5- Follow this road to the right.

6- Turn left down the stairs; at the bottom, turn left into rue Henri Joannon. Turn right into rue Vialleboudou.

7- Cross rue Saint-Michel and turn right by the fountain into the alleyway that leads downhill through a covered passageway alongside the houses. After the covered passage, continue down the stairs, passing to the left of the cinema and joining avenue Hector-Peschaud; turn left, then right into place du Balat.
